Creativity at Its Source
You know, up until recently, I have never seen myself as a creative. Funny enough, I’ve just been having fun.

It’s not that I didn’t feel deserving of the title; I just reserved it for folks that were, like, doing creative things at a high level.

Spike Lee, that’s a creative. Or Issa Rae, creative!

Me? Having fun! Lol. But I’ve recently done away with that mindset. Just because something is “small” does not change the DNA of what it is, an apple seed and an orchard, identical DNA.

Despise not “seed” beginnings, friends.

So I give you all my word that I wrote this article, but I did slap that bad boy in ChatGPT and asked it to fix my grammatical errors, because, baby, y’all are not finna embarrass me on Glorilla’s internet!

Creativity, to me, has always been a journey. For a long time, it felt abstract, something that came and went, something I could not control. Over time, I have realized that creativity is always present, it is just a matter of engaging with it. At its finest, creativity comes from God, from the Holy Spirit. Every project I am involved in begins with prayer, acknowledging that I am not fully in control of the creative process and that I am merely a vessel to be used. Time and again, I am amazed at how God takes a project and elevates it beyond what I could have imagined. My advice to anyone stepping into creativity is to start here: surrender the process and trust in the Source. Often, at the end of a project, I can look at it and think, “Wow, I was not as involved in this as I thought I was,” and recognize the divine fingerprints woven throughout.

Creativity in Practice

As someone who engages in multiple forms of creativity, composing, songwriting, guitar, oral communication, program design, directing, and most recently filmmaking, I have come to see that true creativity is not just about grand ideas. It is about being deeply engaged with the details that others might overlook. Paying attention to the nuances, the small choices, the subtle interactions, that is where creativity thrives. A creative person does not simply create; they notice, refine, and care in ways that bring projects to life. In every endeavor, whether it is designing a program or shooting a film, it is the dedication to detail that turns a concept into something remarkable.

Perhaps the most essential element of creativity is fun. The joy you find in the process fuels the work itself. For me, shooting a film is the part I love the most. The editing and getting lost in the minutiae can be tedious, but the fun is what keeps the spirit alive. I often tell my team, and I lead my teams with this principle: “Having fun is serious business.” We are not playing games, but we are intentional about enjoying the process.
